Look, I don't know if this will help given the fear of rejection (and I have rejection sensitive dysphoria, so please trust me when I say that I am definitely not attempting to minimize its impact), but I believe that one of the things that might actually let you know if you are a good match with the person that you might have an interest in pursuing a relationship with, is their response to you letting them know that you struggle with understanding those rules and social conventions.

There's something a little magic that can happen when two socially awkward, rule-confused human beings meet and connect together, too.

And yes, you can 100% tell someone "look, I know we all have our own ways of expressing and needing to receive affection. So, instead of trying to study you like a lab rat while trying to figure out what each of your gestures mean, and how you'd like me to respond, I figured that maybe we could talk about it."

You're not being histerical nor clingy, you're just trying to understand the other person, and seeking to develop your own personal ways of communicating with each other.

I've tried this approach many times in my life and, while some partners have been a bit surprised by how direct I was, the vast majority of the time, it was very well received.

"Help me better understand you, so I can help you better understand me," is at the very core of what any type of relationship should essentially be - platonic, alterous, romantic, etc.

And there are situations where a partner might seem distant without them even realizing it.

You might meet someone that is autistic (perhaps without them even knowing they are autistic), for example, that doesn't instinctively seek to steal a touch here and there.

However, if they know that it carries some special meaning to you and/or makes you feel safer in the relationship, they might be happy to hold your hand in public and adopt certain new behaviors that will help reinforce the bond you share.

Just because it is a conscious effort on their part to adopt those behaviors, rather than something they would "naturally need" or "instinctively use" to express affection, won't make that affection any less real, on the contrary. It means you are worth that effort to them.

Or, if touching in public is something that makes them feel very uncomfortable in general, regardless of the person, then you'll know that it's got nothing to do with how they feel about you, at the very least.

And you'll have the choice of either respecting that boundary they have, or making the decision of finding yourself a partner with more compatible ways of sharing affection and intimacy.

So yes, it is possible to address those issues and ask to clarify certain things without it coming off as being too needy or abnormally anxious about it.

Because each person and each relationship is unique. It doesn't come with a clear handbook telling you what each signal the other person is sending (or failing to send) and what you are receiving means.

It's a handbook that you'll need to be writing together.

So, clearly asking "how am I meant to interpret that signal (or lack of signal)?" is extremely reasonable. And if the other person can't understand that, you'll probably face some more major communication issues down the line.

Not wanting to hold hands in public until the relationship has been officialized can be normal. It trully can.

But you shouldn't have to worry about if it is normal.

Because maybe it's not.
